Cradle of Creativity

Bangkok is full of surprises. If you look hard enough, you can probably find something to satisfy every whim and fancy.

While searching for libraries in Bangkok, Daddy came across references for the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC). Conveniently located near where we live - on the 6th floor of  Emporium (up the escalator from SFX Cinama on the 5th floor) - it hosts one of the largest design and creativity resource centers in Asia. There are lots of books, magazines, journals, multimedia, online database and Material ConneXion Bangkok, a global platform for material solutions and innovations.

Mom went "treasure" hunting like a kid in a candy store, and Janelle and Andre went to Kinokuniya; Daddy and I sat outside the center and watched a documentary on preserving the environment and wildlife on the large screen on the wall.

If anyone gets glassy-eyed from looking at all the colors and fancy designs, they can chill in the little cafe outside the library, which had a live band and beautiful view of Benjasiri Park.

You can tell I loved the view; if the cleaners did not do their job properly, you can still find my hand and face prints on the glass...

My First Birthday

It's my first birthday today
Happy, happy, happy day!
My family's here to celebrate
And so are some of my mates
Thank you all for coming
Thank you for the presents
Thank you all for sharing
On this special occasion

Sushi, spaghetti, pastry... I'm hungry!

I'm too young for a cigar,
so this bread stick will do for me

Shhh, let me concentrate...
Cake-cutting is a serious business

Come on, Auntie Yuriko, let's go for a dip!

My world... with my little friends

We have now lived in Bangkok for a little over two months. It seems like we are finally getting some decent weather... we can actually see the sun, blue sky and clouds clearly!

Lukas and Lily are my first playmates. We met during one of my morning strolls, and because we were very close in age, we fast became friends. While the adults enjoy their chats, we kids play and share each other's toys.

Yesterday, Mommy gave them some of the balloons she bought for my birthday celebration. They were thrilled to see the big and long balloons, while I was busy walking around, climbing the steps and examining a water bottle. Mommy was quite exasperated, as we were not exactly cooperative when in came time to take group photos. Could she blame us, really? We could not understand most of what she was trying to tell us!

I'm walking on sunshine... whoa oh... and don't it feel good!

Who's following me?

Whoopee! Mommy's here with sushi for everyone!

Naughty Mommy is making such a mess with all these soap bubbles! The cleaning auntie will be angry with her...

I'm not greedy, three balloons are not too few and not too many
One for Janelle, one for Mommy

Loy Krathong 2009

Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. "Loi" means "to float", and "Krathong" is a raft traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk, decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks, etc. During the night of the full moon, many people will release a small raft like this on a river or in lakes and lagoons.
While the ones in Phuket were more traditional, in Bangkok, we saw mostly bread "flowers", which went on sale over the past two weeks in supermarkets and at roadside stalls. I suppose the fishes will feast on the bread Krathong and reduce the clean-up later.

The festival probably originated in India as a festival of thanksgiving to the deity of the Ganges for giving life throughout the year. In Thailand, apart from venerating the Buddha with light, the act of floating away the raft is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges and anger, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. Thais believe that floating a krathong will create good luck, so even though it often falls on a weekday, most families will take even their littlest ones to participate in the annual ritual.

Loy Krathong 2008 took place soon after I was born. I had just returned from the hospital. As part of Chinese tradition, Mommy and I had to be confined at home for a month, so everyone stayed in. Daddy and Mommy were worried I would be terrified by the celebratory noises - laughter, noise makers, fireworks - and it did get quite loud from 9pm onwards. But between their gentle lullabies and Mommy's breast, and with all the doors shut and drapes drawn, we made it through relatively unscathed.

Now that I am almost one, Daddy was hoping to take the whole family to the Chao Phraya River to witness the spectacle Bangkokian style. But Mommy was adamant that I was still too young and would be freaked out by the crowds and noises, so once again, we hid in the bedroom and under the covers as I tried to sleep through the noise. The only consolation came in the form of the Loy Krathong decoration at the Banyan Tree Bangkok lobby, where I was allowed to pose but not touch the display.

On the way back, however, we had to walk home from the MRT Station at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. The Rama IV-Ratchadaphisek intersection had been blocked and all vehicles were turned back.

Instead of joy and good luck, there was a clash between the existing vendors of Klong Toey Market and employees of the area's new owner. Apparently about 10 shots had already been fired before we were there, but fortunately nobody had been hurt. More than 100 vendors used water, vegetable baskets, chicken and beef containers as well as a six-wheel truck to create a gridlock from 5pm till around midnight.

Until then, Daddy had been planning to start visiting the famous wet market and buying fresh food, fruits and vegetables for us. But I doubt he will follow through with his plan after witnessing this event.

I am too young to know who is right and who is wrong; all I know is that we should all try to get along. For everyone's sake, I hope they all went to lay their krathongs the next night and let their anger and grudges drift away. Happy Loy Krathong and good luck to everyone

The Sky I Miss

I was born here, an island with beautiful beaches and plenty of sunshine
bright and warm

I enjoyed the gentle sea breeze, no traffic noise, no jostling crowds
peaceful and calm

I wished I could walk, let my feet sink in and feel the sand caressing my toes
tingling and exciting

I miss the beachfront resorts, where we spent afternoons strolling after delicious lunches
leisurely and relaxing

I look forward to also being able to canoe around the lagoons by myself
fun and thrilling

We will definitely go back to our Dusit Laguna Villa to get away from the city drudge
eager and anticipating

I long to graduate from swimming in the bathtub to the sky pool
naughty and nice

Emporium Pet-a-Porter 2009

Here is a little background: We are a family of dog lovers. Daddy and Mommy used to volunteer at the SPCA in Singapore, even before my siblings were born. Not long after, Mommy became too distraught, when she discovered that the SPCA had to put down some 90% of the animals they rescued because of space constraint. It was necessary but painful nonetheless, especially when it happened to animals they nursed and babysat.

They left to help out at a private animal shelter, Noah's Ark, which was a no kill zone. In fact, Mommy only found out that she was pregnant with Janelle, when she bled while cycling on the way home from Noah's Ark. No more cycling or strenuous chores after that but off and on, whenever they could, they still visited to spend time with their four-legged pals.

I always enjoy watching the dogs run and play in the park.

Run, boy, run fast,
if it makes you feel happy,
run as fast as you can,

don't look around,

My World Tuesday - Siam Ocean World

I love fish. Something about the graceful way they move through water. Mommy and Daddy have been wanting to take me to Siam Ocean World ever since we moved to Bangkok; we finally made it last Monday.

The local schools have already started their year end holiday period, so we had plenty of company. Daddy got us through the double pricing trap with a cryptic "Phu Yai, Song" - Thai for "Adult, Two" - so the three of us spent a nice afternoon in the aquarium for THB 700.

There were so many wonderful creatures, too many for me to write about, so here are a few interesting moments in our under water adventure...

"An awe-inspiring adventure back in time..." Er, what are we supposed to be looking at, Daddy?

Mommy, I want those clingy webbed feet too!

What a beauty hiding among the corals... Not!

So tiring, carrying his house with him wherever he goes...

One, two, three, ... I lost count, but this Spider Crab definitely had more legs than I!

Sayang, Penguin, sayang... can I take you home?

Get me outta here!

Another innovative aquarium design... just under a million baht!

Chow time! Will perform tricks for food...

This Great White is too close for comfort...

Danger... Danger... From above!

Skywatch : Twister...?

And now for today's weather in Phuket: sunny skies in the morning, expect some clouds in the afternoon and chances of rain over parts of the island... right, try telling that to the local fishermen trying to paddle their way to shore from under that scary storm cloud. One moment, we were enjoying our walk on the beach; the next moment, we were scrambling for cover... Mommy, I'm getting wet!

Save the Wildlife Save the World

I love watching the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. I already recognize quite a few animals - including elephant, lion, monkey and wolf - but last Thursday, thanks to the "King of the Jungle" event at the Emporium, I was able to see, smell and even touch wild animals from Africa, including several endangered species. It was simply thrilling to see Crocodiles, Meerkats, Monkeys, Ostriches, Rusa Deers and many different kinds of beautiful pheasants outside and throughout the mall. What I enjoyed most were my close encounters with the Ruffed Lemur (I touched it!), Simba the 8-month old lion cub and Henry (as in Thierry Henry) the 6-month old white tiger cub.

I don't really understand what Global Warming is about or what it has to do with the animals. But Daddy and Mommy told me I wouldn't have the chance to see these wonderful animals if they became extinct. Maybe in a few years time, I will better understand and appreciate why my parents strive to do their part to save the environment by not adding to the pollution (use public transportation!), reusing bags and recycling whenever possible.

For your information, Bangkok is ranked 58th among 100 places to remember before they disappear. Home to almost 15 million people and playing host to over 10 million tourists each year, the City of Angels is "sinking due to the soft underground, heavy urbanization and excessive pumping of groundwater." I can certainly vouch for the fact that many parts of the city are exposed to flooding every time it rains. According to some pundits, "unless urgent steps are taken, large parts of Bangkok could be under water before the end of the century." Does that mean we have to move soon?

IF : Flying

Time is flying by...

Mommy: My baby is just four weeks away from her first birthday. What a milestone! Just think, a year ago I was still pregnant, wondering what she would look like and worrying about my delivery! How the time has flown! She started to walk recently. For the past week, she refused to sleep at her usual time, and everyone had to keep her company as she seemed ready to totter around the room and dance all night.

My favourite things

I am still a little baby, so my daily life is pretty much a routine. I have no concept of weekday, weekend or public holidays, just that most of the time, it is only Mommy and I for much of  the day. While others may find this it quite boring, it is comforting for me and Mommy does not have to crack her brain trying to think of new things for us to do together.

I'm 11! 11 months, not years, although people always comment that I look much "bigger" than my age. Although I have not made any baby friends here in Bangkok, I enjoy watching and playing with the older kids at the playground and pool in our condo complex in the evenings.

Swimming in the pool and watching birds fly low
Listening to Janelle playing on the piano
Dancing to music and light bedtime reading
These are a few of my favourite things

Laughing out loud when Andre tickles my tummy
Hugging the dogs and kissing my Mommy
Giggling at Daddy pretend to sprout wings
These are a few of my favourite things

My space

Janelle always teases Andre that he is Mama's boy. As Janelle does not want to share a room with him anymore and he is too afraid to sleep alone, he now sleeps with us after we moved to Bangkok. It is alright with Mommy but not Daddy, since I have to share their super king bed even though Andre's current bed is actually meant for me. Now I still squeeze between Mommy and Daddy, and when I wake up every so often because of a nightmare or to drink milk, I tend to wake everyone up. While this arrangement is more environmentally friendly - we only need to turn on 2 air-conditioners, in Janelle's and our bedroom - but soon, Andre has to go back to his room when I need more space to sleep by myself...

IF : Germs

Mommy did not mind Snowy and Ringo sleeping on the sofa or bed, but after I was born, her cleanliness streak kicked in. She has to think of ways to keep the house clean and free of germs. Dettol is her greatest weapon. Daddy has to use it to clean the dogs after their morning walks, and Mommy lathers it generously everywhere.

Love is in the air...

This is the first photograph featuring just the three of us...
Flipping through albums filled with Janelle and Andre's childhood photos,
I realized I did not have a photo taken with just Daddy and Mommy.

Mommy beamed like a first timer with a child this small.
She has diverted all her love to me; I feel so sorry for Daddy.
Married for 17 years, parents for over 13 years, doing it all again now.
We can never understand the responsibilities of parenthood,
Until we become parents ourselves.

Mommy really enjoys spending time with me.
She is cherishing the experience of being a first time mother again...

The fun has just begun...

3rd Floor @ Siam Paragon

Living in Bangkok gives me my first real taste of urban lifestyle. Over the past two weeks, we turned into mall rats, exploring the luxury shopping havens of Siam Paragon and Emporium. They were a tad too stimulating for my little mind, but I enjoyed the sights, sounds, kiddie rides and the overall buzz around me.

Jamboree Land @ Emporium

Everywhere we go, it is obvious we are NOT in Phuket any more. Weekdays in Phuket were very peaceful - at least till Janelle and Andre got home from school - but they could get quite boring, since Mommy and I stayed home mostly and kept each other company. But now, Mommy takes me out almost everyday. Besides the regular Bangkok "public transportation" of metred taxis, tuk-tuks and motor bike taxis, there are also shuttles to Tesco, Carrefour and Emporium. Often, Mommy does not have the patience, so she will just push me on the stroller, as it takes no more than 15 minutes to reach our furthest destination.

"Antiqueky" Neilson Hays Library

It is not always fun and games. My family loves to read, so we really enjoyed the Kinokuniya Bookstores in Bangkok, although someone always has to keep an eye on me in case I chew or rip up a book. Last Saturday, we braved the rain and went in search of the Neilson Hays Library, the oldest non-profit association in Thailand. The library was founded in 1869 by the Ladies' Bazaar Association, which formed the Bangkok Ladies' Library Association to serve the reading needs of the large English-speaking community in Bangkok.

We thought about becoming members but eventually decided to postpone for a while, till I can sit still and not be a menace to the books and other users. Most of the books there look huge and heavy, with hard covers. Many have been there for years. There were also lots of beautiful picture books, which Mommy would like to borrow home and read to me.

It might have been the rain, tranquil ambiance or cool air conditioning in the library, but I fell asleep in Daddy's arms. He soon followed me into dream land. This gave Mommy a few precious moments to browse through some magazines and books without me bothering her. We will be back soon.

IF: Infinite

Rhythm and Music

Mommy is thinking about enrolling me in a baby gym or playgroup, as she wants me to interact with other baby friends. I have no problem with that, and I love moving my body to the rhythm whenever there is music. I can sing too, "ah Ah AH!" When Janelle plays her piano, I will crawl to her very quickly and sing beside her.

No doubt it makes me happy, and Mommy sings to me everyday during my shower and changing times. Maybe Mommy will let me learn the ballet, as Janelle regrets she is too old for it and too busy with her school work and activities. Andre has given up piano and switched to guitar. I think Mommy will eventually let me play the piano, since I show so much interest in it.

Concentration

Every Saturday, Janelle has piano lessons with a concert pianist - Sebastien Koch - at the Alliance Francaise, near Daddy's office. We usually spend the hour in the library, until class ends.

Last week, Mommy found a book for me. I could not recognize the words in the book yet, so I spent most of my time playing with it, flipping through and looking at the pictures. I was amazed by the Velcro "lock" on the cover: once Mommy taught me to how to open it, I stuck it back and pulled it open again and again. I stayed seated there for 20 minutes!

Nowadays, I can be fascinated, quietly focused on things for quite a while. The only problem is, I don't tell anyone when or why...

IF: Welcome

Welcome to my wonderful little world! I want to share with everyone my perspective of the world. Every morning is a new day for me, it makes me feel excited when everyone smiles and talks to me. It does not take much, often it is the simple things that make me smile. Birds, flowers, wind chime, little children splashing in the pool...

Try looking at the world through my eyes: you may see things around you in a whole new way. Appreciate God's creations a bit more...

illustration friday - Strong

Whenever Janelle carries me in her arms, she will complain that either she has become weaker or I have become heavier. Mommy can still carry me and run like the wind, but she will complain her arms ache and become numb after a while. Sometimes, when they least expect it, I even put up a struggle and try to wiggle out of their grasps. I expect soon I will win these tests of strengths, as I am growing day by day.

Mommy: You certainly are an armful and a bit more, but we don't mind at all. After all, we want you to be healthy and strong. Happy 10th month!

In the Clouds

For our first 2 weekends in Bangkok, we were invited to dinners. So last Saturday, we played host instead. Janelle and Andre's godfather, King Yu, was in town with his Dad for M&M (makan and massage). Uncle Zhirong's family was available as well. So Daddy invited everyone to dim sum lunch at the Bai Yun Restaurant (白云) in Banyan Tree Bangkok.

Maybe I was too excited; I had a little diaper accident just as we were about to leave home. Because of the "costume" change, we ended up last to arrive. I was very happy to see these familiar faces, especially King Yu's Dad and Uncle Zhirong. Matured men make me feel more secured? But my laughter soon turned to tears, when the elevator started to zoom up. Nobody remembered what the rapid change in pressure would do to my ear drums till I screamed in pain. The crying actually helped eased the pressure, and before my tears dried, we were on the 59th floor. The maitre d' suggested we transfer to the other elevator to go up to the 60th where the restaurant is located, but we decided to walk in case I started to cry again.

It was a small tastefully decorated restaurant. The view was definitely worth the climb up this high. Everything in the streets looked so tiny: trees, cars, BTS trains... people looked like ants walking upright. Whenever I got restless waiting for the food, someone would carry me around for yet another view of the Bangkok panorama. Maybe it was the thin air, but I sure giggled a lot up there. Daddy said the view was even better at night one floor up at the rooftop restaurant, Vertigo, but I would not be allowed in till I was much older.

The food was nice, although missing some traditional dim sum fare like porridge (艇仔粥), pork ribs and "phoenix claws" (凤爪). We ordered the buffet, so after the initial delay, there was a parade of round bamboo trays bringing yummy food to our table. Daddy's favorite was also mine: steamed rice paper rolls (肠粉), although Mommy only let me eat the roll without the stuffings.

Janelle had her first piano lesson at 2pm at the Alliance Française de Bangkok next door, so she had to leave early. Daddy walked her over and came back just in time for last order. He was panting so hard, we thought he tried to practise for the upcoming Vertical Marathon and ran up the stairs. Actually, he talked too much during lunch, Daddy did not eat much, so we waited for him to finish his last order.

We were all stuffed, and I was feeling drowsy, when we began our descent from "the clouds". To work off the calories we put on and reduce the effects of the air pressure change, we stopped at all the restaurants on the way down. I liked the sea water aquarium at Pier 59 best, so it gets my vote for next month's makan venue.

Daddy's girl

video
When we go out for lunch or dessert, I am so happy because I get to share everyone's food. OK, not really, since Mommy won't allow me to have any unhealthy stuff, spicy food makes me cry and sugar is very bad for me. So, no ice cream and only fruit bits for me. Daddy and Mommy have to make sure the bits of food are tiny enough for me to swallow, so they sometimes have to chew a little before putting the food into my mouth. Inevitably, this will elicit lots of eew's and yuck's from Janelle and Andre.

I enjoy the company of my family but I can be a real handful when I show off my bad attitude at the wrong time. Yesterday, Mommy brought me to Carrefour for lunch and grocery shopping. We shared a bowl of ramen at Hachi-ban and I was quite well behaved, until she went to pay the bill. I started to throw a tantrum. Mommy had a titanic struggle on her hands, trying to carry me up while pushing the stroller to the counter to settle the bill. I refused to sit in the stroller from then on, so she had to carry me the whole time, while she did her grocery shopping.

I felt bored and uncomfortable after a while and started squirming in her arms. Mommy tried in vain to stop me, until she realised it was breastfeeding time so she took me to the fitting room. After that, she had to quickly finish her shopping, so she could bring me home for my nap.

I did not wait to get out of there and started screaming. Mommy gave me a tube of cold tofu to play with to calm me down. It worked, but when we reached the counter, I refused to give it up. The whole store heard me! Mommy asked the cashier to scan it quickly and passed it back to me. She had to sacrifice the tofu, as I held on to it and squashed it all the way home.

Good Morning, Bangkok!

We celebrated our first full week in Bangkok with Sunday Brunch at Romsai Restaurant in Banyan Tree Bangkok. The restaurant was very child-friendly: there was a special corner just for toddlers like me, with soft cushions and toys, and there were entertainment items just for us as well.

When the magician came around to our table to perform these funny tricks,
I literally shrieked from delight.

Everyone took turns to play with me, while the others enjoyed the scrumptious buffet spread.
The magician's buddies made balloon sculptures into different shapes and animals. We brought home three, but my favourite was a bird on a stand. I was so happy that I stuffed it immediately into my mouth. Mommy had a fright when she saw my mouth covered in blue marker ink! Luckily, a few wipes later, I was as good as new. There was a little nature haven for those who prefer dining outdoors. Daddy brought me out to see the terrapins and fishes. The crumbs from my hand sure brought out the "beast" in some of these fishes, especially the big fat koi...

Social Life in Bangkok

Now that we have left Phuket, we often talk about the things we miss: fresh air, countless stars in the night sky, wide open spaces, no traffic jam... But one thing is for sure, we have a lot more social life here in the nation's capital.

Last weekend, even before we finished unpacking, we received our first dinner invitation. We went to Prem Mansion on Sukhumvit Soi 12, where Uncle Zhirong, Auntie Angela and William had lived the last 7 years. It was an older apartment, and the place was huge. In fact, as soon as we walked in the door, right smack between the living and dining rooms, there was a full sized ping pong table! The men and boys worked up a sweat before dinner, while we ladies munched on hors d'oeuvres and snacks. Dinner was some kind of Thai-Chinese fusion, but I did not eat much as I had stuffed myself with enough appetizers. Hee Hee!

Last night, we went to Uncle Chiet and Auntie Yuriko's apartment. Daddy and Uncle Chiet are literally nextdoor neighbors at work. We also happen to live in the same block, Ebony Tower at President Park. They had bought the apartment about 2 years ago and had done major renovations. The decorations were tastefully arty. You see, over the years, Uncle Chiet had accumulated lots from the Banyan Tree Gallery, which they used liberally throughout the apartment. All very nice, most very fragile. I got everyone all stressed up, because I was the proverbial bull in the china shop. Uncle Chiet's Mom had sent some special soup mix from Singapore, so we had delicious Bak Kut Teh for dinner. I like Auntie Yuriko best, because she carried me and kept giving me soft toys to play with. But my favorite "toy" was the iGallop machine they had in the TV room. It was as much fun and safer than a real horse... giddy up!

Farewell, Phuket!

Uncle Bob and Auntie Lyn invited us for a farewell dinner; we were leaving Phuket on the same day, Aug 19. We decided to go to the new restaurant that "popped up" at the traffic junction just outside Laguna Phuket, called Crêpes Village. It was an interesting meal, but I quickly got bored of eating at the table. Janelle and Andre saw a basketball court for patrons' use, so they entertained me with their imitation of the Harlem Globetrotters, albeit a much less skillful version.

I felt exhausted at my usual bedtime, so I made my request known, very loudly and annoyingly. The whole group squeezed into the Toyota Altis - Andre in the trunk! - and went to our villa to let the dogs out for a breather. We piled back in again soon thereafter and headed back to Dusit. I went for my bath and bed, while Daddy enjoyed some wine and conversation with our guests.

Good night, Phuket... would I be dreaming of Bangkok?

IF: Caution

Snowy: What do you think I'm worried about? Narelle falling out of bed?

Friday, August 21, 2009

That was then, this is now...

I was about six weeks old when I first stayed in the Dusit Laguna Villa. As you can see, I barely filled up the wash basin. I was already a pretty big baby, and I sure gave Grandma some wet and wild fun, when she was giving me my bath.

We were there for a couple of days last week, before we move to Bangkok. No more basin time; I was having a rollicking good time in the bath tub! But when Daddy turned on the jacuzzi, I had a bit of a shock and cried my eyes out. Then again, maybe the next time we go there, I'll be filling up the whole tub and enjoying the jacuzzi all by myself...

Caught in the act

video

Mommy on the soapbox...

"Very hot!" Janelle complained incessantly. I had to keep wiping beads of perspiration off Narelle's face and body with a handkerchief every few minutes. I even splashed pails of water on the ground and awning, my version of evaporative cooling. Phuket was getting hot and humid again, after the rains of last few days. I managed to wash Andre's soft toys and hang them out to dry before keeping them in the boxes. I will wash Janelle's soft toys tomorrow. I have finished all the bedlinen and whatever else was washable, so we can put them straight to use in our new apartment. It does seem like I have developed OCD but I am just trying to keep as much dust and dirt from Narelle, since she loves putting everything in her mouth.

Calvin was back from Bangkok after signing the lease for our new home. The packers will come this Saturday and finish the packing, especially the fragile items. We will take some of our belongings and spend a few days in our Dusit Laguna Villa, until we leave Phuket on Aug 19. It will be a nice break from cleaning the house and a much needed rest before we have to unpack reaching Bangkok.

Calvin and I will come back and walk the dogs twice a day; at the same time, we can reminisce and catch a few last glimpses of the house. The dogs will not have so much freedom to roam around after we move to the condo in Bangkok. They can only use the service lift, and do their "business" in the designated dog area next to our block. Unfortunately, the nearby Benjasiri Park does not allow dogs, so we will have to explore a bit to find places where they can run around once in a while.

We will take the doghouse to Bangkok, although we have not decided where to place it in the apartment. We had thought about giving it away, but it's still quite new, and Narelle likes to crawl inside and play with her toys.

There are a few pots of orchid, which I still cannot decide whether to take with me or leave them behind. I'm afraid that I may bring some unseen soil pests with me too.

Finally, Janelle and Andre may get their own rooms. Maybe. It really depends on the final bedding arrangements. We are taking our super king Sealy bed with us, but the landlord already has 2 king and 1 single beds in the condo. We have to decide when we get there but before the packers unload everything and leave us the backbreaking task of moving the big clunkers around ourselves.

Here's a glimpse of President Park Complex, our future home.

WHERE'S MY FOOD?!? I was so hungry and impatient, I started to gnaw on the bowl and bang on the table to get everyone's attention ;-P

Happy Birthday, Singapore! Happy 9th Month to me...

"Say bye bye to Daddy," coaxes Mommy every morning. I try, but I am much more adept at waving before I shut the door.

After slamming the glass door on Daddy's car, Mommy and I head to the bathroom, where she takes her quick shower, pausing every minute or so to keep me entertained and make sure I remain safely in my personal "bathtub". Mommy knows my little secret: if she squeezes the baby penguins tummy and squirts water at my mouth, I get really tickled and enjoy my bath a little longer. It's really fun!

What I really want is to play with the bar of soap. It's too big and slippery and I can't get hold of it, so Mommy put it in my hand once. I was so excited that I immediately put it in my mouth; Mommy almost had a heart attack and rushed to wash my mouth.

Mommy has set a routine for my naps: two 90-minute sessions, one each in the morning and afternoon. It is easier for her to prepare my lunch, before I wake up and demand her undivided attention. She has started experimenting with different types of mixed rice for me. So far, we have tried the Multi-Grain and Five-Coloured. Sometimes, she adds anchovies (more familiar to Singaporeans as Ikan Billis and 江鱼仔. I usually have a healthy appetite, but I often make things difficult for Mommy, when I crawl here, there and everywhere in the middle of meals. She has to catch up and try to feed me without spilling the food, while dodging the darting tongues of Ringo as well. Luckily she cleans the floor every morning, so there is little risk of me adding dog fur to my meals.

I can say and understand the word "bird"; they are the little things that fly up in the sky. Unfortunately, just about every sound that comes out of my mouth sounds like "bird". Mommy was so jealous the other day, when she heard me saying "da da da". Then she remembered "dad dad" are almost always the first words she asks me to say every morning when we wake Daddy up and before he leaves the house.

I love to sing with Janelle and Andre, especially when Janelle is playing her piano. I quickly crawl to her and try to play join her in a duet, although my skills are not quite up to her level. I pull myself up and hold on to the piano stool, just as I do with anything and everything nearby, whenever I feel like standing up. That's why I often bump my head when I slip and fall, like I did recently against the dining chair and got a nice little bruise on my forehead.
video
Such are the growing pains in everyone's life. I hear Singapore is 44 this year. Wow! It will be quite a few more years, before I get that mature. Everybody, wish me a happy 9th month!

Back on the Island

These days, besides cleaning the house, Mommy is busy with packing. Even though she does not want us to eat unhealthy food from outside, she has very little time to fix us proper meals. More often than not, she simply cooks a big pot of rice and makes it last through dinner; she will make soup from everything in the fridge or get Daddy to buy some dishes back after work.

We had lunch at the Laguna Café in Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket on Saturday. Daddy wanted to get everyone out of the house, so Janelle and Andre could get some fresh air besides staying home watching TV or playing games on their computers, phones or PSP. After lunch, we took a stroll around the resort and fed the fishes and birds with our lunch leftovers.

Mommy will miss the beach and tranquil lifestyle here in Phuket. It is so different after coming back from the hustle and bustle of Singapore, to peace and quiet after a week of noise and crowd in the city. Although we like going back and visiting family and friends, home is still the best. Bangkok is more like Hong Kong than Singapore, so we will have to get used to city life. Two more weeks till we say bye bye to Island Life and hello City of Angels!

My first jam session

video
I might have been the first timer, but I was grooving like a pro.

While we were away...

About a week before we left for our vacation, a buzz began to build around our part of Phuket. More and more policemen and soldiers appeared on the streets as each day passed. Checkpoints sprouted. Potted plants decorated the roads. Fresh saplings were planted and unruly trees were pruned everywhere, especially inside Laguna Phuket.

Daddy said his workplace was going to host a big meeting, with lots of VIP's from many different countries. It was lucky that we had scheduled our trip during this time, so we did not have to go through the hassles of road blocks and security checks.

Soon, in addition to the neighbourhood roosters, I was getting startled by the sounds of another type of birds, the big green metallic kind. 4 - 6 helicopters were using a school field just outside Laguna Phuket as helipads. They presented quite a spectacle for the kids living nearby, but Mommy did not like the idea for us to join in their impromptu exploration of these military aircraft.

Daddy found out that even for those who were on duty, only a few managed to catch a fleeting glimpse of celebrities like US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Besides, it really could not have been much fun, as it rained almost non-stop the whole time... was it because I was not here to sing, "Rain, rain, go away; come again another day"?

Child of God

Last Saturday, the whole family went to Ang Mo Kio Methodist Church. Besides us, Grandpa and Grandma, Uncle Bob and Auntie Lyn, King Yu and his parents were there too. There were supposed to be more guests, but confirmed and suspected H1N1 cases kept some away.

It seems like everyone was talking at the same time, catching up on news and old times. Then the strange man in a black robe - they called him Pastor Stanley - asked us to open up the thick red book, the United Methodist Hymnal, and respond accordingly.

After some reading and Q&A, Mommy carried me to him, and he said a few more words before putting some water on my head. It was very warm in the church Sanctuary, so the water felt cool and refreshing. Soon, the ceremony was over and everyone clapped their hands and went back to their chatting and photo taking.
So, it is official: I am a Christian. A Methodist, to be precise, although I really have no idea what it means yet. I suppose Daddy and Mommy will explain to me when I get a bit older.

Close Encounters

Mommy found out about Kindermusik through one of her Blog friends, so she signed us up for a trial lesson. Hah! As Janelle would say, I was very "pro".
Without prompting, I took the lead in bouncing, singing, clapping... I guess I was too naive to be afraid. Besides, I have been trained well in daily roughhousing sessions with my siblings; Mom being there 24 x 7 also helps.
I did get to meet Noey there. He is a little more matured than I, so he was a bit more guarded with his response. Not like me, trying to touch everything and play with everyone. On the way back, we dropped by Forum Galleria, where Toys R Us and Chiltern House were located. Both Janelle and Andre used to attend nursery and kindergarten at Chiltern House.
My first "horse ride" was quite fun. As you can see, I won't make a very good pony express rider, as mail might be lost not so accidentally, hee hee...

My first visit home

Sorry, this blog has not been updated these past few days, since we got back to Singapore. We have been busy going out: shopping, visit family and friends, sightseeing.

My first time in Singapore. My first nap in a sarong cradle. My first ride on the MRT. My first stroll along Orchard Road; we visited some old family favourites: Centrepoint, Takashimaya and Wisma Atria.

It is all so strange and exciting. Lots of people, noise, tall buildings. Nobody speaks Thai, but everyone speaks the same language as Daddy, Mommy, Janelle and Andre. So many strangers smiling at me, wanting to hold me. It is quite scary at times.

Today, we went to visit our house. Another family lives there now, but some time in the future, we will come back here. Many of the neighbors that Daddy and Mommy knew have moved away, but a few close friends have stayed behind. I don't know many of the people here, but I would not have a problem making new friends... just smile and say "Sawasdee ka!"

Pasta Party

La Trattoria at the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is one of our favourite restaurants. We usually have dinner there once or twice a month, especially the Sunday dinner buffet.

We went there for dinner after the Family Festival launch party with Jerry's family. Johnny and Natasha were Janelle and Andre's first friends in Phuket; the dinner turned into some sort of farewell. No tears were shed, just pasta carbonara and vongole with lots of cheese, followed by yummy ice creams and desserts.

My first tooth

We went to the launch party at the Summer Family Festival in Laguna Phuket last Friday, and I enjoyed interacting with other babies and parents. It was so much fun. There were lots of bigger kids on the bouncy castle though, and Mommy was concerned for my safety, so we did not linger there.

Anyway, today I have to announce my first tooth appearance, which has been confirmed by Mommy after sticking her finger in my mouth. Yummy food, here I come...

妈妈的话

How time flies. You are eight... months old. Even though you are the newest addition to the family, you are already number one in all our hearts. How about you? How do Daddy, Mommy, Janelle, Andre, Snowy and Ringo rank in your chart?

For better or worse, life in this family has forever changed. Your cries and tear pierce our hearts; your laughter and smile drive our fatigue and troubles away. Singing nursery rhymes and lullabies to you is a skill all of us have mastered. Just the other day, as you and I drove home after dropping Janelle off for her sleepover, lulling you to sweet slumber and watching that content smile on your face was a most special moment I cannot begin to describe.

You have started to eat "real" food, and you love tomatoes. But it seems your favourite is still breast milk. Not only does it provide nourishment and beverage, it is also your primary source of comfort. When all else fails and nobody can calm you down, back in my arms you come. Suckling my breast is the most soothing therapy for you. It has been tough on my back, but I plan to breastfeed you for at least a year. I do hope you will start to be less clingy; a little break now and then goes a long way towards recharging my batteries, ok?
Weekday evenings are the most hectic. I have to prepare dinner and take care of the day's laundry. Everyone takes turns entertaining you: Daddy lets you sit on his shoulders and play Hannibal; Andre dazzles you with his footballing skills (and spills); Janelle puts on a mini piano concert. Anything for our little princess...

From the moment you were born, I watch you grow, day by day. Learning to turn over, sit up, crawl... now, you can pull yourself to a standing position using furniture and the wall. Soon, you will start teething and walking and get into more mischief. I shall not ask for too much, just health, happiness and be a good Mommy's girl for as long as possible.

Happy 8th month!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Narelle: I am 8 months old today. Mommy has asked for the podium, so drum roll please...

video

Little sleeping beauty... not!

I have been cranky the past few days, ever since I recovered from a little bout of fever. That Daddy went to Bangkok for three days did not help, as Mommy was the only one looking after me for the entire time. I am always seeking her attention, to carry and cuddle me, so much so that she cannot do any chore. I follow her in my walker and hold on to her legs while she bustles around the kitchen. She needs her own space too sometimes...

Daddy and Mommy are busy these few days, trying to decide where to stay when we move to Bangkok. Daddy came back with a few choices shortlisted. He made a chart and ranked each place according to attributes like convenience, access to public transport, unit quality, facilities, dog friendliness, etc. As most of the places do not allow pets, we have limited choices on hand.

The 3 key things about living in Bangkok are location, Location and LOCATION. Daddy must be able to get to and from work (Sathorn), and Janelle and Andre to and from school (Sukhumvit Soi 71) easily. Daddy has confirmed that traffic jams in Bangkok are as bad as they have ever been, maybe worse.

Last but not least, I need a baby friendly environment so I can interact with other babies. We are not looking at houses even though it solves the dog issue; besides mosquitoes, rats and other pests, we have to worry about security and being isolated from other people.

Mommy and Daddy discuss this every night, after I fall asleep next to them. The three of us will probably have to make a trip to Bangkok to finalize our choice. Or maybe the answer will come to me in my dreams...

A Tomato a Day

I love tomatoes. This particular tomato was special: Mommy planted it herself. It was her first attempt to grow tomatoes, so she did not have any expectation. Not only did it bear fruit, but the tomatoes turned out great, very sweet and juicy. The green chilli plant next to it was also very productive, having produced about half kg and still going strong! Some might say Mommy has green fingers, but they don't look green at all?!?

Farewell, BIS Phuket...

Janelle and Andre came home last Friday with their shirts full of goodbyes and well-wishing. It was the last day of the school year, but with our impending move to Bangkok, also their last day at school. They reminded Mommy not to wash their shirts because of the sentimental value, so Mommy reluctantly hung them for display.

Costa Rica Pitaya 火龍果

Daddy bought 4 dragon fruits from the market yesterday. They weighed a little over 2kg and cost THB 66 (just under S$3). Mommy loves this juicy fruit, especially the deep purple/fuchsia Costa Rica varietal. I tried some too. Even though the color comes off our hands and skin, it could easily stain and maybe ruin our clothes. But we all share one conclusion after going to the toilet: Purple Poop!

Contemplation...

Daddy will go to Bangkok this weekend to look at schools and apartments for our impending relocation. He wanted Mommy and me to go with him, but she was worried about leaving Janelle and Andre alone with the dogs at home. They finally decided Daddy would go alone, so he could cover more ground. Mommy reminded him to take the camera and bring back photos and videos of the places he would visit. I'll miss him. Here's wishing Daddy a safe and fruitful trip...

Another one?

We keep seeing pregnant women everywhere in Phuket: shopping malls, beach, resorts... Is it the latest trend? Mommy thinks Phuket is a baby making place, because life is very relaxed here, and people tend to do things at a slower pace. There are not too many distractions, so ordinary folks stay home and make babies. That's how I came about!?!

Swing Higher, Daddy!

We went to the year end musical performance at the British International School on Wednesday. After dropping Andre off at 6 for final rehearsal, there was some time before the concert started at 7, so we took a little walk around the school. I'm still too little to play at the playground by myself, but with Daddy's help, I had some fun too!

Laguna Phuket International Marathon

Daddy dragged us all - including the doggies - to participate in the 4th Laguna Phuket International Marathon on 14 June 2009. The 5km fun walk started at 8am; we got there just as the whole group stormed out of the holding area, so we started at the very tail end. The weather was hot, but I stayed mostly sheltered inside the stroller. Mommy pushed me, while Daddy held on to Snowy and Ringo. Janelle and Andre were far behind us. Mommy was worried about me sitting too long and getting hot and thirsty, so she walked and ran way ahead and soon caught up with the main group of walkers.
Ahhh, water at last!
We are the Champions, we are the champions, no time for losers...
Don't they look exhausted!?!

Uncle Bob and Auntie Lyn got someone to prepare local Thai dishes for dinner.

Things I like to do in the morning...

Daddy told us we would probably have to move to Bangkok soon. Mommy thinks I will not remember the place where I spent the first few months of my life, so she wants to use this as a detailed and lasting chronicle.

Each morning, after breakfast and morning bath, Mommy puts me in my walker to play for a while before nap time. Today I had a new toy; I gripped it tightly so that I would not drop it wherever I roam. I could grasp the beach ball with my left hand and still hold the toy with my right.

I like to look out to the swimming pool. As long as the weather is good, I can look forward to an evening swim after our afternoon stroll. Mommy is afraid I will catch chills, so she will wrap me up in a towel, as soon as we get out of the pool. She has to make sure not to miss out anything, as leaving me alone even for a few seconds nowadays gives me enough time to put myself in danger - toppling out of the bathtub, falling off the bed, you name it!

I like to play with the dogs' food and water bowls. Making a mess is fun! Mommy learned the hard way to put things out of my reach. Snowy likes to be near me, but I respond by pulling her fur... sorry! Ringo is smarter and stays a safe distance away from me most of the time. But she did lick me a few times, while Mommy held on to my straining arms.

Ahhh, quarter past 10, it's nap time!

Fun, Fun, Fun with Mommy

Mommy drove us to meet Uncle Bob and Auntie Lyn at LHCR for the famous Margarita Brunch. Mommy hasn't driven since she was eight months pregnant. I had to sit quietly in the car seat next to her.

There was a lot of food, but nothing much for me: just some bread and mashed vegetables. I practised my orange juggling, but I was not very good at it. After brunch, while Daddy and the Sayers enjoyed their dessert and coffee, Mommy, Janelle and Andre took me to the Kids Club, which was a lot more fun!

LHC @ Sheraton Private Pool Villas

The Sayers became members of the Laguna Holiday Club in 2007. Daddy helped them to straighten out some membership issues in the early days. They also found out that they were fellow Methodists from Singapore, with Pastor Stanley Chua as the connection; the two families have since become good friends.

Uncle Bob and Auntie Lyn own 2 weeks of timeshare at the LHC @ Sheraton Private Pool Villas. Whenever they visit Phuket - several times a year - we will go out for meals and some recreational activities. We are always happy to host visitors from Singapore. By the way, we will be going back to Singapore on July 20th for a week. It will be my first visit "home"...

Moment of Solitude

We all need a quiet moment every now and then. Mommy is usually busy the whole day taking care of us, even on weekends. She needs a break too but the only time she can really sit down by herself and sip a mug of Milo and read the paper or a magazine is when I finally fall asleep at night. Those few minutes are so precious.

Leisure Time

The pool guy comes every Wednesday and Saturday. If the weather is good, I get to swim on Sunday, so I have to make sure he does a good job cleaning the pool. It had been raining for the past 2 weeks, and the water was very cold. But the rain finally stayed away this past weekend, so I could have my dip in the pool.

Daddy has been clearing his annual leave accummulated in 2008, so he is staying home on Fridays for a few weeks. Since my sister and brother are in school, Daddy, Mommy and I have a nice lunch in Laguna Phuket and then go grocery shopping at Tesco; we drop by BIS on the way home to pick up Janelle and Andre.

Saturday is movie and badminton day, and we usually finish the day with a short visit to Central for Ramen (Hachiban), Italian (Pizza Company) or Thai food (Yum Saap) and dessert (Swensen's).

God rested on Sunday, so do we, lazing around the house and pool. In a few months' time, we will start taking the dogs to the beaches again, like my family used to do before I arrived.

My Next Goal

Every time I come to these stairs, I wonder when I can climb up there and make a mess of Janelle and Andre's room. It should be quite an adventure, I can't wait...

Here we go!

video

I made a huge breakthrough. I used to be stuck either rolling left and right or crawling backwards. Yesterday, I had an epiphany and managed to crawl forward. Like an old hand, as you can see.

Soon, I shall be climbing, walking, running, representing Singapore in the Olympics 100m sprint! Catch me if you can...

Get me outta here!

I am bored! On weekdays, Daddy takes me out for a morning walk with the dogs before he goes to work. After my shower, I will take a nap. Two hours later, I will stick to Mommy until jie jie and kor kor arrive home from school in the evening. Sometimes Mommy takes me for a walk around our pool and let me touch the flowers and leaves if the weather isn't too hot. After Mommy prepares dinner, we will take a stroll outside the house. This is how we pass our time at home on the weekdays.

Calm Before the Storm

I was tricked! Mommy dressed me up nicely to go out... little did I know it was to Bangkok Phuket Hospital for my 6-month vaccination shots. Here you see me calm and smiling, but what Mommy is not showing is me crying my eyes out!

Anyway, I was a brave baby, so I stopped bawling after only a few minutes of coaxing.

Miss Darlie

I am not as patient as I used to be. I get bored with sitting in the tub after I finish my bath, before Mommy has had the chance to finish her morning shower. So she tried showering first while letting me sit on the bathroom vanity and play with her toothbrush. Daddy was worried I might fall off and hurt myself, so Mommy has to find another way to keep me occupied while she showers...

A day out with Mommy & Daddy

Janelle and Andre went to Hae Bin and Jun's house on Saturday, so I had Daddy and Mommy all to myself. After dropping my brother and sister off at Boat Lagoon, we went to Central Festival Phuket.

Daddy and Mommy had lunch at the food hall, while I took a nap in my stroller. For once, they could eat in peace, without Janelle and Andre picking the best bits from their plates. Daddy had beef noodle soup and kway chup, while Mommy ate chicken rice; she thought about ordering from the popular "rice-and-pick-your-own-dishes" stall, but something did not smell right.

We spent a few hours window shopping. Daddy was exhausted, so we took a rest by the artificial pond and had some snacks. There were many beautiful Japanese carp in the pond. They did not seem very interested in the fish food the mall staff fed them. But when Daddy threw in some peanut skin, they came zipping in and made big splashes fighting over this "exotic" cuisine.

The Big Buddha - Part 2

When we got to the top, Mommy let me play with the bell. Boy, was it loud! It was almost as loud as my crying, after Mommy hit the bell with the hammer and gave me quite a scare.

The Big Buddha - Part 1

Since it was on the way, we took a detour and went up to the Big Buddha to have a look. I woke up when we got there. Nice views. I loved the wind chimes hung along the steps to the main statue; the tingling in the wind was charming and soothing.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace...

Daddy was off on May Day, so we went to Alpina Phuket Nalina Resort & Spa in Kata to meet Mommy's blog friend Stella and her husband Lester. They were here on a short break before heading back to Singapore and Beijing where they are currently based.

On the way home, we dropped by HomePro Village Phuket, one of the new shopping malls that has opened up in the Chalong area. After the long drive and adult talk, I was beat so I decided to take a nap while Daddy and Mommy were having lunch just outside Villa Market, under the watchful eye of the Big Buddha.

Finger Lickin' Good

I was very cranky yesterday. Daddy had to rush to his early morning meeting, and he did not have enough time to brush the dogs' fur. Mommy always finishes all the household chores by mid morning, so she can attend to me the rest of the day. She is very busy, and that extra bit was the straw that broke the camel's back.

My incessant whining and crying agitated her even more. I was crying for her to hold me but she had not finished her work. My crying spells went on and on throughout the afternoon for no apparent reason. Mommy tried all kinds of ways to calm me down; she had to multitask and eat her lunch and feed me (not fried chicken!) at the same time.

There were a few quiet moments in between, when I sat and sucked my fingers. Time to get me a pacifier?

Andre's Pet?

This lizard is Andre's favorite. It is about the size of his slipper and lives in our garden. The past 2 nights, though, it was wondering in the living room and Daddy shooed it out. I wonder what it eats...

Uninvited "Guest"

Living in Phuket, we are more in touch with nature. Often, this means we get uninvited "guests". Toads and lizards are regulars. So are giant varieties of beetles, caterpillars, centipedes and millipedes. Once in a while, we also come across land crabs and hermit crabs.

Yesterday, Mommy and I were enjoying our morning bath, when she spotted this slimy slithering serpent at the window. Luckily the mosquito netting prevented it from sneaking in... Mommy quickly took a feather duster and sent it packing. Later, she sprinkled fresh sulphur outside the house to keep snakes away.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

"How's your day?"

I get moody sometimes, so Mommy found the best therapy: fresh air and cool water. Going for a nice long walk always puts me in good spirits, and if there's running water somewhere, so much the better. It may be crashing waves at the seaside, splish-splash at a swimming pool or just a pleasant bubbly fountain... Close your eyes and take a deep breathe!

Monday, April 27, 2009

An orange a day

Mommy loves oranges. Ever since we moved to Phuket, she has grown to love the local mandarin oranges as well. Whether the imported or local variety, she eats one a day. Some of her other favourite fruits grown locally include watermelon, pineapple, mango and dragon fruit. I get to taste some too!

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Bath Time

Every morning around 9am, I take a bath in warm water and mild baby soap. I like to splash around a bit, so Mommy leaves me in the tub with a float to support me from slipping and falling. While I stew in my tub, Mommy will take her shower beside me.Do you know soaking in warm water can prevent diaper rash? I poop 3 - 4 times a day. Mommy washes my bottom with cotton wool soak in water, no wet wipes or toilet paper.

Actually, I slept through it. We drove behind the Jungceylon float for a while and went through Patong. It looked really fun, but Daddy and Mommy thought it was too dangerous for me. Maybe we can all have a wild wet time next year... Sabaidee Pee Mai, Songkran 2552!

Andre the Awesome...?

Not quite! My brother jumped on Daddy's suggestion to go bowling and kept nagging us all weekend. When we finally did, he sure showed us his magnificent form... he started the game with a streak of 5 Gutterballs! His special technique is not welcome by bowling alleys, as it features the ball or his body thumping the lane repeatedly... he eventually got a strike and finished with personal best scores of 79 and 73.

going Going GONE

My sister, Janelle, seldom takes care of me. This is one of those rare moments, and she decided to apply her WWF trademark Horrible Hertha's Hammerlock on me. I surrender!

Winnie Meets a New Friend

Was it the spring blossom, or Pooh Bear's Hunny Pot? Narelle dropped by Hundred Acre Wood for a quick chat.

Dancing Babe

Someone holds me safe and warm,
Horses prance through a silver storm,
Figures dancing gracefully...

I can't walk yet, but if you lend me some support, I can show you a few of my moves...

Sitting pretty

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come...
I can only sit straight up for a few seconds, before tumbling over. But it's fun, oh oh, here we go: one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, TIMBER!

Relaxing Afternoon

No sleepover for boys - "Unfair!" cried Andre - but Janelle got to invite her friend, Hye Bin, to stay over for a night in the Villa. It was a really nice Saturday afternoon; it was so relaxing, I fell asleep in my stroller on the the ferry ride back to Dusit.

Close Encounter of the Proboscine Kind

While the bigger kids went canoeing, Daddy and Mommy took me for a spin around the resort. Beautiful sky, soft white sand. Eeeew! What's that creature lumbering towards us? Long nose, floppy ears, legs like small tree trunks... Daddy said it was a baby like me; I wonder what the adults elephants must look like.

Boy to Man

My brother, Andre, turned 12 last Friday. It happened to be the last day of term 2, so he invited his best buddies to a small party at our Dusit Thani Pool Villa. Daddy gave me a taste of the ice cream cake - yummy - but maybe that's why my tummy felt funny...

Rainbow

It was nice and cool, as Mommy took me on our evening stroll. It's been so hot in Phuket, after Mommy hangs the laundry out at 9, the clothes are bone dry by noon time! In the afternoon, however, the rain starts to pour. No meow meow and bowwow, more like lions and wolves! But today was special. the rain came and went quickly, and I got to see my first rainbow...

"What? Nooooo, you didn't... Awesome!"

Daddy's a real joker and prankster. He cracks me up so much, I poo in my diapers... I know, some of the jokes are pretty lame, and I don't believe half of the stories he tells me. But you've got to give the man some brownie points, 'cause he sure tries hard enough...

You're always by my side...

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Really? I've got a million bucks?

Oh, you mean this fantabulous smile I have... I can't help it, there are a bunch of comedians in my family: Daddy, Mommy, Janelle and Andre are always doing things to make me laugh... hee hee hee, that's a good one!

Who's the fairest of them all?

Is it me, really ? Daddy and Mommy think so, even if I am almost bald, slightly chubby, have a hearty laugh...

Dancing Digits

I love to grab Daddy and Mommy's fingers, especially when I'm drinking milk. Makes me feel safe and secure. Mommy loves to kiss and play with my toes too. She simply can't resist my delightful dancing toes. Can't wait to show her my Taekwondo moves ;-P

Growing "Strains"

When my brother returned from his school trip last Friday (13 Mar 09), he sounded like Rod Stewart. Everyone thought he had a sore throat. It turned out it was just him reaching puberty; he's turning 12 next month. Too bad it's only temporary and that every boy goes through it at some stage. In a few months, he'll probably end up with a deep resonant voice like Dad's. No more superstar singer...

"Yummy... my first meal: Brown Rice with Milk"

When I went for my vaccinations on Sunday (ouch!), Doctor said I could start taking some soft foods. Mommy went straight to Tesco and bought potatoes and infant rice cereal. I can sit and hold my head up with some support, and swallow. I'm not very good at it now, but soon Mommy will give me orange juice and more of that banana she sneaked into my mouth last week. I love Mommy's breast milk, but I can't wait to try new foods!

"Left, Right, Left... hey, slow down!"

I can turn my head from left to right and back again. But please, I'm still a baby and if you make me do it too quickly, I get necksprain and whiplash... just kidding, I just do what I do best, CRY!

Finger lickin' good...

I feel something strange happening in my mouth. Not sure if it's teeth starting to grow under my gum lines. Anyway, I can finally grab something I see and put it in my mouth. Hurray!

Meet my furry friends

I spend much of the day with Mommy in the study. She is a real multi-tasker: while she taps me to semi-sleep in my rocker, she does her stuff on the computer, and eats breakfast and lunch as well. Our dogs, Snowy and Ringo will come in and join us in the cool air-conditioned room too. But Mommy hates it when they bark and disturb my sleep. Sometimes they get excited when they are playing, but most often they react instantly to the doorbell ringing. I get scared by the sudden loud noise, and it takes forever to stop me crying and back to sleep again.

Tummy Time

I am starting to lift my head and push up on my arms to see Mommy. I'm exploring more and trying to inspect my surroundings. Mommy loves to make me laugh when I'm awake, and most often, she puts me on the mat in the study and gives me toys to entertain myself, so she can quickly update my blog...
